The Miriam Dress

Tis the season to wear sequins…NOT! :)

For the party season, we have taken inspiration from one of our favourite women ever, Miriam Makeba. Songs like Malaika, Pata pata and the Click Song form the soundtrack of my childhood in Lagos, Nigeria.

The inspiration is drawn from an iconic photograph of her that embodies the sensuality, confidence, talent and flirtatious nature of the African beauty she was. Having been fortunate to see her play live in Brighton, I can attest that she remained this way into her older years. Also, she endeared me with her free spirit fearless fight against apartheid and the great company she kept with the likes of Malcolm X and Nina Simone.

Now to the dress, it’s a subtle sexy style with a classic bustier midi style that skims the body. We keep it functional with additional grip lining the bust area and the elasticated back. To finish it off, we have a flirty front split to show the right amount of legs.

The style is available in two prints, a vintage style stripe George fabric combined with the classic Vlisco staircase pattern and a modern Vlisco Yellow lines print. Shop here.
